The Woman in BlackAdapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the book by Susan HillDirected by Justin Clow“The Woman In Black” is adapted from Susan Hill’s best selling supernatural thriller. As a play, it binds the audience in its tightly knitted plot, which unravels an incredible sequence of events and, as a theatrical experience, it is a poignant one that is never to be forgotten. Stephen Mallatrat’s script combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality of film noir.
A counterpoint to the B-movie aesthetic of its first production, “Dead Ends”, Spectral Theatre chose to challenge its members with the taut thriller “The Woman in Black”. The intimate cast was pushed to expand its dramatic horizons, while the fledgling company still employed its ingenious technical ability to create an evening of unremitting drama as they were transported into a terrifying and ghostly world.
Presentation House, December 10, 11, 12 and 13 and 17, 18, 19 and 20, 2003.

REVIEWSNiki Graham
North Shore News, Friday, December 12, 2003 “The Woman In Black: Play chills the spine and haunts the mind”
“Des Arthur Hussey moves in an out of his roles as Kipps and The Actor effortlessly, giving a believable performance as the exuberant, excitable actor, who in the process of the story encounters his own nightmare…Simon C. Hussey plays Kipps, portraying the broken man with subtle power. Simon plays many of the extras and manages to make the move from one to the next with little costume change. His accents and facial gestures help distinguish each character… The two balance Kipps before and after the horrendous experience, as The Actor plays the young, vibrant Kipps, while the real Kipps is restrained and sorrowful.”
“Blake Drezet’s set features mysterious doors, shadowy rocks, theatrical furnishings and a small graveyard…Michael Methot’s lighting works…to create an eerie hidden room. It also helps distinguish the eras and clarify the past from the present…Director Justin Clow sets a precise pace; particularly strong are the scenes where Kipps narrates, as the actor portrays him. They move in a sort of dance and as they each turn the speaker faces the audience. Clow manages to make the pared-down, low-budget production full and powerful and to maintain the mystery. It seems at any minute something horrible may happen…” |

Dead Ends II: All-New Tales of Terror, Horror and SuspenseWritten and Directed by Justin Clow, Blake Drezet, Des Hussey and Simon C. HusseyIn their continual effort to bring a Frankenstein brand of theatre to life, Spectral Theatre cooked up a new batch of creepy, morbid tales, “Dead Ends II”. This second instalment of diabolical one-act plays was soaked in all the blood and brains that made the first Dead Ends so delightful to watch. All three stories were written and directed by different company members, providing a truly sordid assortment of ideas. As always, they assembled their monster using mostly recycled materials and good old-fashioned ingenuity. It may not have been pretty, but when you saw it, you’d have had to agree when they triumphantly announced…IT’S ALIVE!!!
Held at The WISE Hall, March 23, 24, 25, 26, 30 and April 1 and 2, 2004.

Live Spelled Backwards: A Moral Immorality Play
Written by Jerome LawrenceDirected by Simon C. HusseyDubbed “A Moral Immorality Play”, this one-act play set in the intimate confines of the Railway Club transported the audience to The American Bar in Morocco. The unique setting allowed Spectral Theatre to offer a glimpse into the lives of six characters: The Woman Who Knew Almost Everything (BADLY); The Richest Girl In The World; The Most Famous Playwright Of Our Time; The Best Hustler In Morocco, and The Most Evil Man In Washington Court House, Ohio, gathered once fateful night under the watchful eye of Frank the Bartender.
As each character partook of Frank’s psychedelic ‘hors o’oeuvres’, personal truths were exposed and they were transformed, briefly and fleetingly, before reality all too quickly closes in…
Held in the Railway Club back room, June 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 29, 30, and July 1, 2, and 3, 2004.

REVIEWS“Live Spelled Backwards” Alan Hindle Terminal City, Thursday, June 24, 2004
“The Woman Who Knows Almost Everything (BADLY), The Richest Girl In The World, The Most Famous Playwright Of Our Time, The Best Hustler In Morocco, and The Most Evil Man In Washington Court House, Ohio are succinct little studies in eccentricity, and that’s the fun of it. At only an hour long, and set in the smoking room of the Railway Club (stroke of genius, that! See a play – yer inna bar! Drink! Genius.), “Live” is an old-fashioned entertainment and a good start to an evening of booze and chat…I’m going to suggest this: Bard is on all summer. Check out “Live Spelled Backwards” first, then the following night or week or whatever, see what Shakespeare suits you.”
“Live Spelled Backwards” Colin Thomas The Georgia Straight, Thursday, June 30, 2004
“Sandi Zweikaft plays (The Woman Who Knows Almost Everything (BADLY) with the requisite vivacity and the equally necessary underlying seriousness. Fabien Melanson is slyly sexy as The Hustler, a local youth with a great gimmick: when speaking English, he communicates exclusively with the titles of pop songs…The acting is consistently of quite high quality, so it’s clear that director Simon C. Hussey has done a good job.”
“Railway Club Transforms Itself Into Theatrical ‘Heaven and Hell’” Jo Ledingham Vancouver Courier, July 4, 2004
“Here’s a quirky little aperitif for you: 60 minutes of live theatre in the back lounge of the Railway Club. And you can take your drink in with you. The characters in this strange, but beguiling piece are dropping acid, smoking funny stuff and popping peyote with Pepsi chasers, so how sinful can a Pale Ale be?...The audience is limited to 20 who sit comfortably at bar tables; the play, directed by Simon Hussey, takes place around the Railway Club’s gorgeous dark-wood-and-mirrors bar – a long, narrow space into which all six characters fit perfectly well. ..A ticket to the play allows you to hang out afterwards in the club. Live theatre followed by live music: sweeter than shortcake.” |

Dead Ends 3D: An All-New Bubbling Cauldron of Wicked WeirdnessWritten and Directed by Justin Clow, V.J. Delos-Reyes, Blake Drezet, Danielle Fecko, Des Hussey and Simon Hussey
Spectral Theatre's third instalment of Dead Ends. A twisted, low-brow, hilarious and horrifying tribute to spooky late-night cinema. In this edition we presented three all-new original shorts featuring some of Vancouver's keenest talent it what was our largest production to yet. Originally intended to feature 3-D projected backdrops, the concept was abandoned in favour of much cheaper rubber bats and spiders that could be dropped into the audience's lap.

REVIEWSThe Boards Thursday, March 24th, 2005 By Ian Alexander Martin "As the titular character, Elias Toufexis shows a stunning dexterity with the text..."
"Megan Morrison as Gertrude is an incredible surprise...Her portrayal of Hamlet's mother solely justifies the price of the ticket, the length of the show, the time it took you to find a parking place, the cost of a beer and probably a couple you buy for her as well."
"Naomi Lazarus works her usual wardrobe magic and seems to have been given enough of a budget to aquire the sufficient yards of luscious material and corseting to make everyone look as sexy and historically evocative as possible." |

Dead Ends Issue No. 4: Back To BadenochWritten and Directed by Justin Clow, Blake Drezet, Desmond Hussey & Simon C. Hussey. "From Beyond" written by H.P. Lovecraft and adapted for the stage by Desmond Hussey. "Professor Simms" words and music by J.P. Featuring an insanely talented cast it was without a doubt the most fully realized edition of Dead Ends to hit the stage. The Beaumont Studios, March 29th - April 1st and April 4th - 8th, 2006.
