DEAD ENDS: A Trilogy of Paranormal PlaysWritten by Blake Drezet with additional material by Des Hussey, Simon Hussey and Justin ClowDirected by Des Hussey“Dead Ends”, the company’s first production, featured three dynamic one-act scripts, which touched on genres ranging from sci-fi to horror to ancient myth. It was best described as genre cinema adapted to the stage, a live “Creepshow” or “Twilight Zone”. Each play explored intriguing plots, with unique conclusions, and created popcorn entertainment rarely experienced in live theatre. Necessity was truly the mother of invention for this intrepid company, which, lacking the fantastic budget of many a Vancouver theatre, was forced to create innovative props, sets and costumes on a shoestring. A thorough scrounging of the city’s alleyways and second-hand shops, along with dedicated hours of construction and practice, allowed Spectral Theatre to succeed in creating three marvellously different worlds, and in costuming a host of both lovable and despicable characters almost entirely out of recycled materials. The first run was held at Capilano College’s Arbutus Studio, November 14, 15 and 16, 2002. The second run was held at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, June 5, 6 and 7, 2003.
